Sports Day of Action at Kenton Recreation Ground
SPORTS from around the globe, free expert training and one-on-one matches were just some of the activities on offer at Harrow Council's Sports day of action.
Held at Kenton Recreation ground, Carlton Avenue, the free day of sports fun was well attended by dozens of residents from the neighbouring area.
Non-contact boxing, face painting and cycling assault courses were the order of the day.
The event, to encourage young people in the area to get fit and healthy while having fun and picking up new skills, was organised by the Council in association with the NHS and local police.
This was the first sports day of action of its kind for the borough, but the success of the first outing has encouraged organisers to repeat the activity day again next year.
In fact, the inaugural event was so encouraging, the council now intends to expand the scope to include other sports grounds and recreational centres across Harrow.
Portfolio holder for Environment and Community Safety, Cllr. Phillip O'Dell said:
"This type of free, open air action event is great for the local community, giving young people a taster of a number of sports and activities available to them locally. By getting active and getting involved people are getting fit and healthy, in addition to the social benefits of taking part in community events."
Sessions that proved particularly popular on the day included the training sessions delivered by Barnet Football Club. The budding footballers also got the chance to meet the club mascot, "Bumble" the bee. Brazilian soccer coaches showcased the skills of Futsal, a South American development game, to improve ball control and technique.
Harrow's tennis stars of the future tried their luck against the current 2010 London Youth Games medal winners in a coaching and practice session.
Also involved in the success of the day was the Safer Neighbourhood Team and the NHS, Primary Care Trust team.
