BECKWITH AND AKURANG OK
Posted on: Tue 01 Apr 2008
Although both Kenny Gillet and skipper Ismail Yakubu are ruled out of this evening's Coca-Cola League 2 game against promotion-chasing Darlington at Underhill through injury, manager Paul Fairclough has good news in the return to fitness of both striker Cliff Akurang and goalkeeper Rob Beckwith.
The 27-year-old Akurang, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury after scoring five goals in five games, and Beckwith, out for five matches also with a hamstring, both trained on Monday and rejoined the squad.
With goals raining in - averaging two a game in March - Fairclough may not disturb the Adam Birchall-Anthony Thomas partnership by rushing Akurang back, but he is likely to show his intent to go for goals against Darlington by playing two wingers in the other two young blood January signings Albert Adomah and Kieron St Aimie.
The manager has gambled without a substitute goalkeeper in 23-year-old Beckwith's absence. Injury ended a run of seven consecutive games as first choice 'keeper for Beckwith.
Footnote: Assistant manager Ian Hendon, who collected an ankle ligament injury trying to prove his fitness for Saturday's game against Wrexham, is off his crutches.
