NEW ROLE FOR "GIFTED" CAREW

Posted on: Thu 10 Jul 2008
Ashley Carew, the 22-year-old former Gillingham YTS midfielder manager Paul Fairclough rates "one of the most gifted players in the squad", is pencilled in to start the new season at right back.

Carew filled in as a defender in a couple of games when the Bees had an injury crisis at the back end of last season and was given a video to study in the close season to look at what is needed in the role.

Fairclough told members of Barnet FC Supporters Association at a Question and Answer session last week that Carew would be given a chance to make the right back position his own.

The manager has a history of successful conversions. He turned Simon Clist from a midfield player to an ever-present and popular left back and improved Simon King by moving him from that position to become an outstanding central defender.
