Experienced Paul Mitchell, the 27-year-old MK Dons midfielder, has signed for Barnet on loan for a month.
Manager Paul Fairclough said: "We have seized the opportunity to strengthen the midfield and provide competition for places".
The Manchester-born Mitchell was in the MK Dons side that lost to Cardiff City in the Carling Cup this week.
He made 64 appearances after joining Wigan Athletic in 1999. He had loan spell at Halifax and Swindon Town before joining MK Dons on loan in December 2004.
Mitchell secured a permanent deal with the Dons the following summer and has made 67 appearances for the club. He captained the side through the 2005-06 season. He has also played on loan at Wrexham.
Mitchell was given a six-month contract by MK Dons in June after a spell out with injury.
Assistant manager Ian Hendon said: "He has completed pre-season training and proved his fitness in games, including the Carling Cup tie".
Subject to the completion of the paperwork and registration with the FA, Mitchell will be in the squad at Chester City tomorrow and a contender for a starting place".
