Adam Birchall, Barnet's 23-year-old top scorer last season, has been chosen as the Mortgage Express Player of the Month for August by Times group football writer Paul Wreyford.

The 5ft 7ins tall Wales U21 international got off the mark for this season with a fine opening goal at Rochdale and pipped club captain Lee Harrison and versatile Ashley Carew for the Mortgage Express champagne award.

Former Arsenal youth goalscorer Birchall, who "works his socks off" in the Barnet cause, is an Englishman born in Maidstone who has made 12 U21 appearances for Wales.
