BEES RETURN TO WINNING WAYS

Posted on: Mon 05 Oct 2009
Barnet returned to form and winning ways with a victory over local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge by a 2-0 scoreline at Underhill, with goals from Paul Furlong and a John O'Flynn penalty separating the sides.
Ian Hendon made three changes to the team that had started at Rotherham at the weekend.
Gary Breen returned to the centre of defence and his calming influence and defensive nous was in evidence from the first to the final whistle.
Micah Hyde also returned in central midfield and his calming influence and ability to control proceedings was in evidence all evening.
Yannick Bolasie also returned on the left wing and he was in explosive form, at times virtually unplayable, indeed he nearly scored in the first minute of the match.
Initially Dagenham looked a confident, well-drilled outfit, but their ploys were soon sussed and it was no surprise when Barnet took the lead in the 21st minute.
Bolasie made ground down the left flank before driving a centre into the six-yard box that Paul Furlong turned into the net, great combination play by a winger and his centre-forward.
The Daggers huffed and puffed for an equaliser and just before half time Paul Benson hit a well struck shot that Jake Cole in the Bees goal did well to keep at bay, but in time added on in the half Barnet doubled their advantage.
A long ball out of defence by Breen found Bolasie stationed out on the left. He then advanced goalwards with pace and before he could position himself to unleash a shot his feet were taken from him by Scott Doe. The protests from the visitors at the decision were merely out of routine rather than a sense of injustice.
John O'Flynn steeped up to successfully convert the spot kick.
On Saturday the Bees were two down at Rotherham at half time and heading for a defeat, tonight they were two goals to the good after 45 minutes and three points were now clearly in sight.
Dagenham briefly rallied in the second half with a dangerous Benson cross being cleared by Ismail Yakubu, but the Bees held firm and were content to wait and attempt to catch Dagenham with too many men forward and launch swift counter attacks.
This victory over a Dagenham side that came to the game in second place augers well. Barnet were the dominant force in the game and were totally deserving of their victory, even John Still admitted as much.
The game was won on the back of the first half goals but this was a much improved display that lasted for the 90 minutes and at the final whistle the defeat at the Don Valley all of a sudden seemed many moons ago.
The Bees host Grimsby Town this Saturday.
