GOOD HOME FORM CONTINUES-match report

Posted on: Wed 28 Oct 2009

A much improved second half performance saw Barnet eventually run out convincing winners over bottom of the table Darlington by a 3-0 scoreline, with all the goals coming in the second period.

John O'Flynn and Albert Adomah were recalled to the starting line up by Ian Hendon.

It was O'Flynn who went closest to opening the scoring when he turned and fired a shot goalwards after good work from his striking partner Paul Furlong who'd flicked the ball on.

Buoyed by their first win of the season last week Darlington took the game to Barnet in spells in the first half with Simon Thomas and David Davis both having chances for the Quakers.

Indeed just before the half time whistle a mistake by Joe Devera on the edge of his own penalty area let in Thomas, but his shot flashed wide of a post.

This had not been a good 45 minutes for Barnet and the players must have trudged back into the dressing room knowing that they were about to be reminded that a significantly higher grade of performance would be expected of them in the second half.

With just over an hour on the clock Barnet introduced Jake Hyde and Nicky Deverdics in favour of O'Flynn and Micah Hyde and within a minute the Bees were ahead.

Kenny Gillet won a tackle high up the pitch on the left, the ball falling to Yannick Bolasie, whose cross was deftly turned goalwards by Ismail Yakubu, his first league goal of the season.

Jake Cole then held onto a close-range goal -bound effort, a good save, a vital save.

Jake Hyde harrying, pressing those on the ball and linking the ball well was giving Barnet's play a new dimension; he was Tevez like! From one smart pass he set free Adomah whose shot from an acute angle thudded against the far post and away from danger.

On 80 minutes Barnet extended their lead when Adomah took the ball goalwards and saw that Deverdics had got ahead of the play and fed the ball into his path enabling the midfielder to pass the ball into the back of the net, also his first league goal of the season.

Two minutes later Darlington's fragile confidence was in tatters as good work by Deverdics on the left followed by an Jake Hyde cross saw Yannick Bolasie slide in to complete the scoring.

On the back on their second half display no one could deny that Barnet were anything but worthy winners, but Darlington did have their moments and in different circumstances, with a bit of good fortune the Quakers could have got something out of the game.

The Bees have now not conceded a goal in their last three home matches and with Gary Breen in majestic form at the back it is easy to see why.

The Bees travel to Chesterfield next Saturday.
