JAKE COLE IN FINE FORM

Posted on: Thu 29 Oct 2009

Workaholic Ian Hendon has covered matches in East Anglia, Hertfordshire and Essex in the past few days looking at possible signings for the future ... "if someone goes out the door".

The cagey manager, who does not publicly announce his team selections in order to keep the opposition guessing, does however concede that goalkeeper Jake Cole is the first name on his team sheet.

The 24-year-old former QPR goalkeeper has played in all 17 of Barnet's games this season -- and has kept seven clean sheets, as many as the side managed all last season.

When Cole, who has ambitions to become a tattooist, arrived at Underhill on loan for 10 games in March he managed consecutive clean sheets against Gillingham, Rotherham United and AFC Bournemouth to help steer the Bees clear of the relegation area.

Ian Hendon spent the summer trying to clinch a permanent signing for Cole with the Bees and he signed on July 6. Hendon said today: "He took a while to get going, in pre-season and early on, but he has come back into the form we saw when he was with us last season".

Ryan O'Neill, who is a booking away from a ban, looks likely to miss out at Chesterfield on Saturday with the ankle injury he collected at Colchester on Tuesday. But Hendon was unlikely to tamper with his back four of Joe Devera, Ismail Yakubu - another ever-present, Gary Breen and Kenny Gillet anyway.

The introduction of Jake Hyde and Nicky Deverdics against Darlington last weekend proved to be a turning point in the game - and many supporters are clamouring for the 19-year-old striker to start at Chesterfield. Hendon admitted that Hyde's display against the Quakers was making his selection of who to play upfront all the more difficult.

Does he change a winning team? Ian Hendon will provide the answer ... at 2.00pm on Saturday.

Understudy Phil Carpenter, a former PROTEC keeper, has been the man on the bench - played in the 3-0 defeat practice match defeat by Colchester United this week - but Cole also has competition from first team coach Lee Harrison and former Hendon goalie Will Viner.
