BEES AND CHERRIES SHARE SPOILS-match report

Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009
The Bees drew one apiece with AFC Bournemouth in a game that Barnet should have been well ahead at half time yet had to thank Jake Cole's penalty save for a solitary point.
Loanees Calum Butcher started at centre-back, replacing Daniel Leach with striker Craig McAllsiter leading the line with John O'Flynn; Paul Furlong being among the substitutes.
Despite the recent inclement weather the pitch played perfectly and Barnet seemed to be enjoying the upgrade from the playing surface at Accrington as the ball was moved with pace and precision and openings created.
An early chance fell to O'Flynn after the Alberts, Jarrett and Adomah, had combined, but the Irishman headed over.
A raid down the right by the fleet on foot Liam Feeney indicated that the Cherries were capable of mounting dangerous forays deep into Barnet territory, but this time his cross evaded all-comers.
On 15 minutes the Bees took the lead. An incisive pass from Micah Hyde set O'Flynn free in the inside left position and after a series of passes and strikes on goal the ball ricocheted back to O'Flynn who drilled the ball over the goal line; despite a desperate attempt at a clearance.
Moments later Barnet again had the Bournemouth defence floundering with O'Flynn being given a golden opportunity to put his side two goals to the good. Amazingly the usually prolific marksman shot wide.
Barnet were peppering their opponent's goals with quality deliveries from wide areas with 18 -year-old Butcher looking increasingly sound in defence and there seems mileage in the partnership of McAllister and O'Flynn.
Quite possibly, taking into account the quality of the opponents this was Barnet's best 45 minutes of the season, and it certainly would have been had the Cherries not sneaked an equaliser with half-time a whisker away.
Feeney darted down the left wing for the visitors and delivered a deep cross that Ismail Yakubu was able to deflect away from those lurking at the far post, but his clearance fell to the boot of Brett Pitman whose well struck volley from distance gave Cole no chance.
Mostly the Cherries had the upper hand in the second period with Cole being called upon to make a series of fine saves.
With 15 minutes left a headed back pass from Ahmed Deen didn't have the legs to make it all the way back to Cole and Pittman nipped in only for Cole to concede a penalty and receive a caution for his troubles.
Pittman took the spot kick but Cole was equal to the challenge and parried the ball high into the night sky and away from immediate danger.
Late on Jarrett put in a cross that might have paid dividends, but both sides had certainly done enough to deserve to take something out of an enthralling game that indicated the quality of League 2 and also that Barnet are able to live, and even flourish, at this level.
The Bees take on the Shakers of Bury this Saturday.
