Barnet FC have applied for international clearance for Chris James, a 22-year-old New Zealand international attacking midfield player who is hoping to prepare to represent his country at the World Cup in June with the Bees.
James, who also plays on the left or right wing, started his professional career with Fulham in 2004 and was a regular in the reserves. He declined an extension to his contract at Craven Cottage after failing to make the first team grade to pursue other opportunities. He then played for Tampere United in the top division in Finland.
James, born in Wellington, New Zealand, was capped by England at U19 level, but then opted to play for the country of his birth. He has played 16 times for New Zealand and, in 2009, was named as part of the FIFA Confederation Cup squad to travel to South Africa.
In addition, James has represented New Zealand eight times at U20 level and won his country's soccer International men's Young Player of the Year.
James was a member of the New Zealand U20 team that qualified for the U20 World Cup finals in Canada - he scored seven goals in six games, including a hat-trick against Samoa.
Ian Hendon's contacts have alerted him to the possibility of signing James on a free transfer ... the player is keen to get playing to prepare for the World Cup.
