Ricky Holmes, the top scorer for Chelmsford City last season with 21 goals in 54 matches for the Blue Square South-side, is the first signing by manager Mark Stimson for his New Look Barnet squad.

The speedy England C international attacker - he plays on the wing or as a striker - was twice Chelmsford's Player of the Year and has attracted interest from several Football League clubs, including an offer from Peterborough United. He will celebrate his 23rd birthday this Saturday.

"I am sure our supporters will enjoy his attacking flair", said Mark Stimson, who has been tracking Holmes over the last couple of seasons.

"I look forward to working with him on the training ground to help him become a League player ... something he is very keen to do".

Holmes was on a week-to-week contract with the Essex side, but was released last month after rejecting a one year deal to stay at his current wage. Although the highly rated goalscorer might have attracted a five figure fee, Chelmsford released him to "pursue a career at a higher level". Holmes, who has a two year old daughter, Brooke, is giving up his job running an adult football arena at Southend for his new role as a full-time professional player.

He completed the paperwork for his signing on Friday - the first time he had ever been to Underhill - and underwent a medical at The Hive this afternoon.

Holmes was released by Southend United as a 16-year-old because he was "too small". He is now 5ft 8inches tall. After leaving Roots Hall he studied for a degree in Sports, Health and Exercise.

"I am delighted to get his signature", said Mark Stimson.
