Barnet v Stockport County

Barnet and Stockport could not muster a goal between them, as both teams left Underhill with a point each.

Bees Manager Paul Fairclough made just one change to the starting line-up following the midweek draw away to Rochdale with Paolo Vernazza replacing ankle injury victim Anthony Charles in the Bees midfield.

Stockport started the game the brighter off the two sides with Tes Bramble looking to get in behind the Bees defence early on.

Nevertheless it was Barnet who had the first effort of the game in the fifth minute and it nearly rewarded Dean Sinclair with the game's opening goal.

A long goal kick by Ross Flitney was flicked on by Tresor Kandol into the path of Liam Hatch, and his cute lay off found Sinclair but Hatters goalkeeper James Spencer came off his line quickly to block the Bees midfielders effort.

Just six minutes later and Sinclair nearly got in behind the County defence once more when a fine move by the Bees involving Hatch and Hendon saw the latter cross low into the box but Sinclair just failed to get onto his captain's pass.

Despite having the greater possession though the Bees nearly fell behind in the 17th minute when Flitney pushed Adam Griffins speculative effort from the left onto a post - King there to clear the ball for a corner before a Hatters player could convert the rebound.

The away side then had another chance to take the lead two minutes later and again it was Flitney who came to the Bees rescue when he palmed away a Tes Bramble header.

Jason Taylor then shot wide for County as the away side looked to gain advantage in the contest.

However, Barnet were not to be denied and King's long punt forward in the 22nd minute found Kandol, and with the ball dropping from high in the air, the Bees striker brought the ball down in the left of the penalty area before his fine left footed effort was well held by Spencer in the County goal.

Bramble then headed straight at Flitney in the 27th minute as the away side again looked to stamp their advantage on a game that was going from end-to-end.

Sinclair then had his third opportunity to give the Bees the lead four minutes later when he latched onto King's header across goal following an in-swinging free kick by Adam Gross from the Barnet left - once more though Spender was quickly off of his line to thwart the Bees midfielder.

Three minutes before half time Jamie Ward's 25 yard free kick failed to trouble Flitney in a half which neither side could find the back of the net.

The second period began with a high tempo with both sides again looking to grab that vital goal but it was the Bees who looked the more likely in a dominate start to the half..

Five minutes in and a fine back-heel by Man of the Match Andy Hessenthaler found Sinclair and his inch perfect cross was met by the head of Bailey but sadly for Barnet, Spencer was there to push the midfielders header away to safety.

It was a great chance for Barnet to get the game's opening goal but they did not let that miss affect them and just two minutes later Vernazza went close with a fierce left footed drive that drifted just wide.

In fact, it was all Barnet in the early stages of the second half and in the 53rd minute Hatch had the best chance of the game to get the opening goal.

Tresor Kandol

A fine through pass by Vernazza released the Bees target man but with only Spencer to beat in the Stockport goal, the ex-Gravesend forward could only direct his left footed strike wide of a post.

Bramble then shot wide for The Hatters before Hessenthaler did similarly for the Bees in the 64th minute.

Despite a strong start to the second half by Fairclough's men, Stockport slowly began to gain the ascendancy once more and the Bees were restricted to long range passes that both Hatch and Kandol were struggling to get onto.

Kandol and Hendon both saw efforts go well wide before a Hatch effort, following fine work from Spencer again missed the target 15 minutes from time.

Stockport, although seeing a lot of possession, were struggling to get anything past the impressive centre back pairing of Paul Warhurst and Simon King.

In fact, in the 77th minute King had a great chance to score but he could only direct his header from a fine Bailey corner, over the crossbar.

Hatch then wasted another glorious opportunity to score when he decided to try and control the ball on his chest following a fine Sinclair cross rather than head it first time.

Bramble then saw his cross/shot drift just wide of Flitney's right hand post two minutes later before an audacious Bailey overhead kick flashed wide of Spencer's goal.

In a frantic last ten minutes both sides seemed to feel the tension knowing that defeat for either would be disastrous and as such efforts on goal in the closing stages were at a premium.

Bees Manager Paul Fairclough did introduce Lee Roache from the bench in place of Hatch but he struggled to get into the game and other than a Bailey effort that flew over the cross bar in the final minute, neither side had any further chances to win the game.

There was frustration all around Underhill when the referee signalled the end of the contest with all in attendance knowing that a win for either side would have guaranteed safety.

The Bees had a the better chances but it wasn't to be and a final day trip to the all ready relegated Rushden and Diamonds still leaves the Bees with it all to do.
