Bailey: superb second goal
Barnet manager Paul Fairclough made three changes to the starting line-up following last Saturday's defeat to Accrington Stanley.
Giuliano Grazioli replaced Liam Hatch up front whilst there were also starts for Jason Puncheon on the left and Anthony Charles at centre back - Andy Hessenthaler and Paul Warhurst both missing out.
The Bees started the game brightly and Tresor Kandol went close after four minutes when his curling effort from 25 yards went just wide of ex-Bee Scott Tynan's right hand post.
Hereford began to get more into the game after Barnet's bright start and it was the away side who were able to keep better possession of the ball better in the opening period.
After 24 minutes a fine one-two between Stuart Fleetwood and Tim Sills saw the latter's shot across goal saved well by Lee Harrison diving low to his right.
Four minutes later though and, against the run of play, the Bees were ahead.
A fine pass by Ian Hendon on the Bees right found Grazioli in space just inside the Hereford box. The striker controlled the ball before finish calmly past Tynan in the Bulls goal.
Phil Gulliver looked to get a quick reply for the away side but his header went wide from a Andy Williams free kick before Sills hooked harmless wide following another Williams set piece.
Dean Sinclair then tried to put Barnet further ahead five minutes before half time but his fine left footed drive from 22 yards was well hard by Tynan diving low to his left.
A minute later and the Bees came even closert to extending their lead when Nicky Bailey met a Barry Cogan corner at the back post but the ball hit Puncheon and went wide.
The second half began with the away side again seeing the greater possession and Graham Turner's side nearly equalised just a minute in when Fleetwood forced Harrison into a fine save at his near post.
The Bees were still doing attacking of their own though and a fine cross after 52 minutes by Hendon close to the right by-line found the head of Kandol but the big striker could only direct his header wide when under pressure.
Kandol then shot wide following a fine Sinclair run forward before a Puncheon drive from 25 yards deflected just over Tynan's crossbar in the 61st minute.
A minute later though and Barnet were to get that second goal and it was a contender for goal of the season, even at this early stage of the campaign.
Nicky Bailey picked up the ball near to the right touchline before a sublime turn left three Hereford players standing still. The midfielder then cut into the box before seeing his shot take the slightest of deflections and going past Tynan in the Bulls goal.Kandol then had two superb chances to seal the game for the Bees and they both came from fine crosses on the Bees right by Cogan. The first a left footed shot that failed to hit the target and then a sharp header that flashed inches wide of Tynan's right hand post.
Sinclair then shot over for Barnet before another diving stop by Harrison denied Simon Osborn at the other end.
Puncheon, now playing on the Bees right after Richard Graham's introduction for Cogan, went on a fine run before seeing his left footed strike go just wide of a post.
Hatch then replaced Grazioli up front and the big man nearly got a goal almost immediately after coming on when his turn and left footed effort went just wide, although Tynan appeared to have the effort covered.
The Bees were now playing some fine counter attacking football and five minutes from time, a fine dinked ball forward by Puncheon found Kandol and the big striker took one touch before firing his right footed effort across Tynan but, sadly for the fromer Dagenham and Redbridge striker, the ball flew just past a post away for a goal kick.
Then a minute into the three added for injuries, Puncheon capped off a fine afternoon for the Bees and himself personally when he sent a fine 25 yard curling effort past Tynan into the roof of the net.
The Bees have their first points of the season … the only way is up.
