Wycombe vs Barnet
 1 - 1
Date:
31/03/2009
Venue:
Adams Park
Attendance:

Referee:
S Bratt

Barnet came away from Adams Park with a deserved point, Paul Furlong having equalised just before half time after John Akinde had given the home side an early lead. A good number of Barnet fans were there to see it and they themselves gave a vocal performance worthy of praise.

Ian Hendon selected the same starting line-up and substitutes as he had for the game against Darlington at the weekend.

In the third minute a ball into the box by Gary Breen led to John O'Flynn having a strike on goal and the striker nearly capitalised on a mistake by the Wycombe keeper Jamie Young moments later as the Bees started the game in a positive mood.

The Chairboys scored first when in the 19th minute Akinde took the ball towards the Barnet goal and after shaking off Breen's challenge he created enough space for his right foot shot to beat Jake Cole from inside the box.

Young was fortunate the stay on the pitch when following another self-made calamity he chopped down Albert Adomah as the winger looked certain to have a strike on goal. Perhaps defenders were behind the ball, but it was a picture book definition of what constitutes a "professional foul." The keeper receiving merely a yellow card.

The Bees drew level in the 42nd minute when following good interplay between O'Flynn and Furlong on the edge of the penalty area the target man brushed aside the challenge of Frank Sinclair and with a right foot finish Barnet had deservedly drawn level.

In the second period Wycombe upped the tempo and introduced a series of substitutions in an attempt to swing the game in their favour but they were confronted by a hard working Barnet outfit who themselves looked menacing in breakaway attacks.

Nicky Deverdics was working hard in midfield to nullify danger and also start attacks when he got on the ball, and with Cole, Breen and Furlong all playing well the team had a strong spine.

Ismail Yakubu and Neal Bishop received treatment for head injuries, but after being examined by Mark Stein they were both able to continue.

Cole needed to be alert when Gary Holt advanced from midfield and shot powerfully from distance and in the 62nd minute Albert Adomah had a good appeal for a penalty turned down when he was hacked to the floor.

In the closing moments Cole produced a good save from Matt Harold and showed quick reactions to keep out the follow up from Holt. To concede a goal at this late stage would have been a cruel blow, especially given the first half display when the Bees really took the game to the home side.

Wycombe would have gone second in the table had they won this match but Barnet were in no mood to play the role of the sacrificial lamb at someone else's celebration.

The Bees take on the Gills on Saturday at Priestfield.
