Two goals from the ever green Paul Furlong put paid to Rotherham United's impressive run of away victories as Barnet pulled yet further away from the threat of relegation.

With Matt Lockwood having been recalled by Colchester United Kenny Gillet returned at left back, but Barnet still had a settled look about them as this was the only change to the starting line up.

Rotherham's 4-3-3 offensive formation is designed to attack and they started confidently but gradually the Bees began to assert themselves on their own patch.

The deadlock was nearly broken when in the 21st minute a left foot delivery by Albert Adomah was superbly met in the air by John O'Flynn but his effort was turned onto the post by Andy Warrington. A few minutes later O'Flynn had to leave the pitch when he stumbled to the floor despite being unchallenged, Adam Birchall his energetic replacement.

Early in the second period the Millers enjoyed their best spell of the match and had the Bees pinned in their own half with Drewe Broughton forcing Jake Cole in the Barnet goal to making a fine save; he parried the ball wide enough of the goal so that Mark Birchill could not get decent strike on target.

The was a crucial save since moments later Neal Bishop linked well with Furlong on the edge of the box, the striker turned his man and finished with no little aplomb to give the Bees a 70th minute lead.

Ismail Yakubu continued the good form he has shown of late, dealing with any aerial danger and also being on hand to make vital interceptions.

The game was put beyond the Millers on 81 minutes when Joe Devera in an advanced position on the right fed the ball to Adomah whose inviting cross was met by the head of Furlong, his header looping into the corner of the net.

This headed goal takes Furlong to within one goal of the momentous feat of 200 league goals.

Adomah then had a chance to give Barnet a 3-0 advantage, a scoreline which might have been a fraction unfair on the visitors, but undoubtedly the Barnet players had all worked hard for a deserved victory.

In his programme notes Ian Hendon had praised the central midfield duo of Nicky Deverdics and Bishop and on the night they did not allow the visitors to establish any rhythm or authority over the game, rather they set out to boss the game themselves.

Cole now has more clean sheets than any other Barnet keeper and this was the Bees first "double" of the season having won a thrilling 4-3 encounter at the Don Valley way back in October last year.

This was not an all-singing, all-dancing performance by Barnet, but it was a victory built on a sound defence, due diligence in every area and two examples of highly polished finishing. And that lot tots up to three home points.

The Bees play host to the Cherries from Bournemouth this Saturday, yet another in form team.
