Bournemouth vs Barnet
 0 - 2
Date:
28/12/2008
Venue:
Dean Court
Attendance:

Referee:
F Graham

Barnet recorded their first victory in fourteen matches to mark Paul Fairclough's last match as manager of the Bees against Bournemouth at Dean Court today.

Albert Adomah scored a goal in each half as Barnet defended stoutly and resolutely  and mouted rapier like counter attacks. And should the Cherries ever pierce the Bees rearguard they encountered a Ran Kadoch who was in no mood to spoil his clean sheet.

Fairclough went with a 4-5-1 formation. Kadoch retaining his place in the side, Abu Ogogo finding a new lease of life as a central midfielder, Ashley Carew playing wide right, Adomah wide left with John O'Flynn captaining the side.

In the 18th minute when Marvin Bartley broke from midfield for the home side Kadoch was quickly off his line to smother any danger. His style may be unorthodox, but he is fearless and clearly has the intention of being the master and commander of his own penalty area.

Barnet took the lead in the 24th minute when O'Flynn out on the left wing slipped the ball inside to Adomah, who took the ball around a defender before confidently shooting past Shwan Jalal in the Cherries goal.

Bournemouth were making few inroads as the Barnet players worked hard all over the pitch to deny their opponents time and space. Ogogo was increasingly influential, he tackled and distributed the ball well with O'Flynn leading the line and linking the play.

Almost on half time Danny Hollands hit the cross bar when a Kadoch punched clearance only reached the edge of the penalty area, although Kenny Gillet had got back to cover.

Barnet enjoyed more ball retention in the second period with the home fans becoming increasingly frustrated as Bournemouth's attacks became fragmented and lacking in imagination.

In the 70th minute Barnet doubled their lead when Adomah raided down the left, lost the ball, then retained it and again confidently took the ball past Jalal.

From that moment the Barnet goal was never again seriously threatened and the travelling Barnet fans called for and were given a wave by the soon to be departing Paul Fairclough. It was a poignant moment.

At the final whistle Fairclough was too emotional to take the applause of the fans, he was simply overcome. It had been a long journey for him to live the dream of being a Football League manager and with the blow of the referee's whistle this chapter in his career was over.

Post match he said that the two highlights of his time as manager of Barnet was taking the club back into the League and sending out his team at Old Trafford to face Manchester United, but it is probable that this game will live in the memory too.

In his last team selection he surprised many by recalling Carew, playing Adomah on the left and giving Ogogo a new role in midfield. His selections worked a treat and his players performed intelligently for a deserved victory.

The Bees face the Mariners next Saturday when Grimsby Town visit Underhill.
