Three second-half goals by the home side put paid to any hopes Barnet had of forcing their back into the game after they had fallen behind with half-time looming.

Ian Hendon selected Joe Tabiri ahead of Micah Hyde in central midfield, with Joe Devera returning to the right-back slot.

Within five minutes the ball fell kindly to Paul Furlong but his effort was charged down and the ball ballooned skywards.

Tabiri, one minute later, hit a drive that went over the bar as the Bees gave as good as they got in the early exchanges.

Tabiri was covering and blocking and had assumed a position as guardian just in front of the back four.

Marlon Jackson was causing some problems for Barnet with his fast attacking raids down the right flank and from one such foray in the 36th minute his centre into the danger zone was bundled over the line by John Grant.

Barnet launched an immediate response when a cross from Yannick Bolasie was met on the volley by John O'Flynn, but his effort flashed wide.

Just before the hour mark the home side extended their lead. It was Grant who again was the dangerman as he cut in the from the left, and steered his shot into the far corner of the net.

The task now began to look beyond the Bees as the home side was able to regain possession almost at will with Barnet rarely formulating a sequence of passes.

On 65 minutes the home side established a three goal advantage. Ben Herd, who all afternoon had displayed an instinct to lose his balance from the mildest of challenges, was awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Barnet box.

From the resulting free-kick Andy Sandell swept the ball home with some aplomb into the top corner, Jake Cole could only watch.

On 77th minute Devera conceded a penalty that Scott Donnelly duly converted to give the scoreline an uncomfortable look about it.

That was the end of the scoring for the afternoon, and although Albert Jarrett did put in some decent balls into the box, the task was now limited to damage limitation; the possibility of points from the Boxing Day fixture had long gone.

The Bees take on Northampton on Monday, with a 3 o'clock kick-off.

David Bloomfield.
