The Bees went down by a 2-0 scoreline against Bury at Gigg Lane in a match where Barnet had their fair share of possession but never seriously troubled the home keeper.
Injuries to the squad meant another reshuffle in the defence. With Calum Butcher suffering from a calf strain, Kenny Gillet took his place in central defence, Ahmed Deen moving to left back, with Mark Hughes relinquishing his midfield role to Nicky Deverdics slotting in at right back.
Barnet started the game the more composed outfit and with Albert Jarrett giving the home defence some anxious moments, Gillet looking like he had played in central defence all his career and Hughes covering intelligently all was looking well with the Bees.
On 28 minutes Albert Adomah latched onto a loose back pass and fired in a shot which was saved for a corner, a genuine chance for the Bees.
A moment later Craig McAllister set up Deverdics inside the box but the midfielder could not get hios shot away.
After the opening half hour however, gradually Bury did begin to get in the game and began to put the Bees under a degree of pressure.
In time added on in the first period Andy Morrell went down under a challenge from Hughes inside the box for a penalty to be awarded. Daniel Nardiello converting.
Although the Bees were not giving the Bury keeper a busy afternoon, Jake Cole too, was rarely being called upon and the penalty was the first real chance the home side had created.
The second half was played out in increasingly blustery conditions, but the sound of the Barnet drum could still be heard all afternoon long, booming out from behind the goal.
The second half was notable for Adomah limping off with an ankle injury and Barnet trying to force their way back into the game and Mark Hughes receiving his second yellow of the match for grabbing the shirt of an opponent. In mitigation the player seemed offside, but Hughes will now miss the Accrington cup-tie.
The fact that the Bees couldn't get on level terms could not be put down to a lack of application as Barnet players endeavoured to put pressure on the home side.
With ten minutes remaining Ismail Yakubu tried a headed back pass that was too short and David Worrall nipped in to take advantage, loft the ball over Cole and then head into the net.
Sadly there could be no way back.
The Bees take on Accrington Stanley in a FA Cup 2nd Round Replay on Tuesday at Underhill.
