A goal three minutes into time added on by the Bantams meant that Barnet came away from the Coral Windows Stadium looking at a 2-1 defeat, when just minutes earlier a point or even three looked to be a likely outcome.
Kenny Gillet was chosen to partner Gary Breen at centre-back, Albert Jarrett restored to the right of midfield, Dave Livermore and Micah Hyde returned with Albert Adomah foraging upfront with Paul Furlong.
The Bees settled early and kept possession with Hyde central to much of the play. Midway through the half Livermore had a powerful shot from distance which was tipped over for a corner as the home crowd began to express their frustration at their team's lack of progress.
Should the home side muster an attack Jake Cole again looked capable of dealing with anything the Bantams could offer.
On 28 minutes Barnet were ahead. Cole collected a cross and quickly found Furlong high up the pitch whose deft flick found his striking partner. Adomah accelerated and once in the box steered his effort past the keeper. Silence, except of course from the valiant 159 visiting fans tucked away in a corner.
The home side tried to respond but mostly resorted to long range efforts as Barnet kept the Bantams at bay with the half-time lead being well deserved.
The Bantams upped the ante a little in the second period and missed a few good chances when well positioned, but it really did look at this stage that Barnet would come home with some reward for their efforts.
Eleven minutes from time a cross from the right was not adequately dealt with and as a result Luke O'Brien fired home from close range to put the home side level.
Adomah then hit the bar with the keeper nowhere in the 88th minute with a left footed effort from distance which would have restored the lead.
The winner for the home side was a cruel blow.
Deep into time added on the ball bounced about in the Barnet box, with shots being blocked, a hint of offside, before Michael Flynn bundled the ball over the line.
The home side now left the pitch to an ovation, hardly warranted, but how everyone loves a winner!
The Barnet players then headed for the dressing room, but only after the fans and supporters had acknowledged each other's despond at the hand fate had chosen to play.
The Bees face 4th placed Rotherham United at Underhill next Saturday.
