John joined the club in September 2008 on a free transfer from financially-troubled Irish side CorkCity, where he was highly rated. He immediately made a big impact, scoring on his home debut against Accrington Stanley and continuing a rich vein of goal-scoring form throughout the season, eventually finishing with 18 goals in all competitions. Only a late end of season injury, which ruled him out of the last few games, prevented him from achieving his target of 20 goals last season. He is well-known for his excellent goals-to-games ratio and intelligent attacking link-up play.
