Ian joined the club in 2003 a defender and was soon given the captaincy. He was appointed as assistant manager under Paul Fairclough at the beginning of the 2007-08 season and took up the mantle when Fairclough resigned in December 2008. He made a number of shrewd loan signings and performances soon improved, guiding the Bees to safety and leading to Ian being given the manager's job full-time in the summer of 2009.
