Match Report:
A week after their opening league match, a quirk of the fixture list left the youth team without a youth alliance game this weekend. Instead a midweek friendly was arranged with MK Dons and an extraordinary game of football ensued. Jamal Lowe grabbed four in a pulsating 12 goal match which finally saw the scoring finish at 8-4 in Barnet's favour. Including pre-season, Jeremy Steele's young bees have now gone 5 matches so far this season unbeaten.
The game started ominously for MK Dons who were 2-0 down inside the first 10 minutes. Jamal Lowe opened the scoring with a powerful left foot shot from the edge of the box which flashed past the MK Dons goalkeeper at the near post. Weekes added a second moments later with another fierce drive from the edge of the box which found it's way through a crowd into the net. MK Dons struck back on 11 minutes through the lightening quick George Williams. He used his pace to good effect to beat Andrew Manitou round the outside and cutting across him into the box before firing into the net from a tight angle at the near post.
Barnet immediately struck back to restore their two goal advantage when Lowe finished off a neat move to grab his second of the game. The match continued to thrill with MK Dons' scoring through Williams again. His electric pace again unsettled the Barnet back four and it was Whorms this time who was beaten to the ball and he brought down Williams for an MK Dons penalty. Williams dusted himself off to calmly convert the penalty to make it 3-2 after only 20 minutes of football.
It was Lowe again who took Barnet into a two goal lead before the break. At half-time Barnet used the opportunity of the friendly game to blood some of thier talented Under 15 and 16 players. Thomas Opuku (U16) and Abel Markos (U15) entered the fray and made an immediate impact. Opoku making some strong challenges and adding some physicality to the game and Markos picking some delightful passes to open up the MK Dons defence. However, it was MK Dons who made the next break through. The influential England Youth International midfielder Seyi Ojo intercepted a Callum Adebiyi pass to began a quick attacking move which was finished off well by Brendan Galloway. On 65 minutes Kelvin Osei Addo equalised for MK Dons and the match was back in the balance.
With 15 minutes to go though, Barnet upped the pace of the game and fired 4 goals without reply to put the game to bed. Jamal Lowe was central again to the flurry of goals, firstly running in behind the MK Dons defence and finishing cooly past the unrushing goalkeeper. Almost immediately, Barnet launched another attack with quick interplay between Johnston and Guthmy leading to a diaganal pass from Johnston into the on-rushing Ife Allen. Allen then pulled the ball back to the edge of the box for Weekes who sent an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
Straight from the restart, Gambin dispossed Ojo and passed to Lowe who broke through the MK Dons defence with a powerful run before being felled in the box for a penalty. Johnston stepped up and slotted home from the spot to make it 7-4. The final goal of this amazing 12 goal thriller was scored by Gambin, who slid in at the back post to convert a cross from Guthmy.
"It was an incredible game of football really, 8-4 is a ridiculous scoreline" said Youth Team Coach, Steele. "The roll on-roll off nature of the substitutions didn't help either side in terms of their organisation I don't think, and from a defensive point of view we were disappointed. We really shouldn't be letting in four goals in any 90 minute period, whether it's a friendly or not. But to score eight goals against a strong academy like MK Dons is a fantastic effort and shows that we can pick any team apart with the way we pass the ball and attack with purpose. Jamal Lowe and Kieran Weekes' finishing was of the highest calibre as well. We'll need to keep up that level of forward play if we're going to turn Luton over in the league next week".
