Barnet FC Walking Football Team

Walking Football is a slower paced version of the beautiful game aimed at (but not limited to) over 50’s.
It is designed to help people stay active as well as improve their health, fitness and get those back playing football who may have had to stop due to injuries.

Walking Football comes with a number of physical, social and psychological health benefits leading to a better quality of life. Our team also run a series of social activities and fundraising events to support charities close to the team’s hearts.

The Barnet Walking Football team has been in action since 2016 and are currently members of the Middlesex Central Walking Football League. We regularly play matches and recently reached the EFL regional walking football finals.

After being Invited in March to the prestigious London sports awards at The Guildhall where we were shortlisted in the category “impact in the community “ we never thought our small group would receive more recognition .... 'til now, being nominated In the Middlesex FA grassroots football awards 2020

A fabulous achievement by our walking football team with recognition by fellow Middlesex sportspersons

Such moments for a small set up such as ours gives us a chance to thank some of those that impact on our team.

Since lockdown Club secretary Remo Beschizza

has been incredibly busy emailing all on our books regularly checking on player wellbeing during these sad times.

Our charity coordinator Kevin Ziants who is still studying for his finals arranges Zoom meetups every Friday and with Remo organised our Charity quiz night.

Martin Payne  drew portraits of 20 of us which we purchased and all monies were donated to mind Mental Health Barnet

Tom Moran gave us a smile of pride on the release of his book on walking football.

Mike Moate , Tony Bartolo, Richard Smith and Brian Sandler have all made videos to keep us entertained.

And in the background players are delivering food to our own in lockdown and continually phoning each other.

We are all pieces of a jig saw puzzle , nothing on their own.  But put together make the fun and fab Barnet Walking Football Team!

Barnet WFT raise for Muswell Hill food bank

With winter approaching, we used our sessions last week to help restock the Muswell Hill food bank

An amazing response saw the food bank respond:

“You guys collected a massive 183.3kg of food, the largest non commercial donation Muswell Hill has ever had."

Pictures from our session and the goods at the food bank.

Olympic Spirit

The Barnet WFT returned from a great day out at the Olympic Stadium as guests of Mark Blythe from the West Ham Foundation.

We adapted well to playing 3 touch football on grass, opening the mini tournamentwit a 0-0 draw against West Ham A. We then met a strong Wolves team and we unluckily hit the bar in a close fought 0-0 draw. Victory came in our final match with a 1-0 win over West Ham B, a 5 man move ended with John Cockburn firing home.

A successful tournament ended with fab seats to watch the Hammers play Wolves courtesy of West Ham United.

WFT member called up to England

The Barnet WFT would like to congratulate it’s defensive midfield dynamo Tom Moran on his  International call up.

Tom will join the England Walking Football Team squad travelling to Jenner Park, Barry, for the Three Lions fixture with Wales on Saturday, September 8.

We wish Tom and the squad every success .

Barnet represented at EFL Finals

Barnet WFT have just returned from competing in the prestigious EFL Trust Finals, held at Saint George’s Park - home of the England teams.

With its first class facilities and memorabilia, it was an amazing experience, as the 8 finalists from an initial 50 battled it out to be the best EFL team in England

As the smallest trust team and one of the few not to play in a league, we knew it would be tough.

The Bees opened by beating Portsmouth 3-1 and drawing 0-0 with Grimsby. Unlucky 1-0 defeats to Norwich & Bradford City saw us finish 3rd in our group so technically the 5th best EFL team in England.

Bees player Trevor Warren had a lengthy interview with ITV news and we appeared on regional news around the SE. To add to the occasion, we met many ex-players including a very friendly Norman Hunter.

A great time was had promoting the good name of Barnet FC
