Preview | Crewe Alexandra (a)

18 August 2017

EFL Sky Bet League Two - Alexandra Stadium - Saturday 19th August 2017 – KO: 3pm

Team News:

Elliott Johnson is out for much of this season following the knee injury he picked up in last weekend’s game. Harry Taylor (face) is doubtful and Richard Brindley (ankle) and John Akinde (knee) are both recovering well.

Last Time We Met:

On the final day of last season, Crewe ran out comfortable 4-1 winners against Barnet.

A Chris Dagnall struck twice in the first half was followed by a thunderbolt from Curtis Weston in the 64th minute. Dagnall bagged is hat trick just three minutes later and turned provider for the final goal of the match, assisting George Cooper’s left footed strike.

Manager:

David Artell was appointed Crewe’s manager earlier in January this year. A no-nonsense centre-half in his playing career, making appearances for the likes of Rotherham, Mansfield, Chester and Morecambe.

Artell made 72 appearances for the side he now manages in-between 2010 and 2012. He captained the side at Wembley in the 2012 League 2 play-off final victory over Cheltenham.

Artell has seven caps for Gibraltar, playing his international debut in their second ever official match, a friendly against the Faroe Islands.

Dangerman:

A product of the Crewe academy, George Cooper is certainly one to keep an eye out for. The winger had a breakthrough season last year, scoring 10 goals last and registering 12 assists in all competitions.

At still only 20 years of age, he has attracted attention from a number of Championship and League 1 clubs.

Last Time Out:

Crewe have made a solid start to the season, with two draws in their opening two league games.

A 1-1 draw against Newport County was the result in their latest match, with County taking the lead in the 12th minute. Five minutes later, it went from bad to worse as Perry Ng was shown a second yellow and dismissed.

Remarkably, Crewe scored an equaliser through Chris Dagnall 60 seconds after the dismissal. Crewe dug in and picked up a well earned point.

Crewe (4-3-3): Garratt; Nolan, Raynes, Ng, Pickering; Walker, Wintle, Lowey; Cooper, Dagnall, Porter.

Report | Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Barnet FC

19 August 2017

Barnet suffered their first defeat of the season after a tight 1-0 loss at Crewe Alexandra this afternoon.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts when George Cooper's cross was deflected to Porter, but his header was blocked away for a corner.

14 minutes in and George Cooper attempted an ambitious half way line lob after spotting Stephens off of his line, but the shot went over.

Further half chances came and went for the Railwaymen, with efforts from Dagnall, Pickering and Walker before the Bees registered their first shot on target in the 33rd minute.

Shaq Coulthirst was fouled but the referee played advantage as the ball fell to Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

JCR brought the ball forward before testing Garratt with a low strike, but he was equal to the effort.

After the restart, Mauro Vilhete came close with a free kick from a tight angle. The whip on the delivery caught out the Crewe 'keeper and the ball struck the upright before bouncing clear of danger.

In the 70th minute, the ball fell to Dagnall unmarked in the penalty area but Stephens spectacularly tipped his volley over the bar.

The only goal of the game came in the 75th minute when Chris Porter latched  onto the end of substitute Bakayogo's low cross to give the hosts the advantage.

With 5 minutes to play, Stephens yet again denied Dagnall from close range before Crewe resorted to running down the clock by the corner flag.

In the final minute of stoppage time, Jack Taylor hooked a ball into the box from deep. It just cleared the heads of the Crewe defence before falling to Michael Nelson who placed is effort wide of the post.

Barnet: Stephens, Clough, Santos, Nelson, Weston (J. Taylor, 54'), Campbell-Ryce (Fonguck, 66'), Coulthirst (Akinola, 75'), Tutonda, H. Taylor, Vilhete, Akpa Akpro.

Unused subs: Ross, Bover, Smith, Amaluzor.
