Match Preview: Wrexham AFC (H)

8 March 2021

After a week away, the Bees return to action as they host Wrexham AFC in Vanarama National League action. Preview in association with LVBet.

FIXTURE DETAILS:

Barnet FC vs Wrexham AFC

Tuesday 9th March, 19:00 KO

The Hive London

Vanarama National League

THE RED DRAGONS

League Position: 5th (P26 W11 D7 L8)

Last Result: Sutton United 0-0 Wrexham AFC

Manager: Dean Keates

Club Captain: Shaun Pearson

Since we last met with our next opponents, Wrexham's fortunes have improved massively, both on and off the pitch. Their recent takeover from Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has seen the feel-good factor return to The Racecourse Ground and our visitors harbour serious hopes of ensuring a top-seven finish come the end of the season. Keates' side missed an opportunity to close the gap on the top of the table on Saturday, as they were held to a goalless draw by Sutton United in a drab affair live on BT Sport. However, a clean sheet away from home against opposition at the top end of the table will do no harm for our visitors as they head to The Hive.

Despite their good position in the table, Wrexham has drawn up blanks in front of goal in three of their previous four matches, so if the Bees can remain solid defensively, Tim Flowers' men will fancy a chance at getting a much-needed result under The Hive London lights.

THE BEES

Flowers' men will be absolutely kicking themselves for not building on their deserved victory over FC Halifax Town a couple of weeks ago. Since that hard-fought win, the Bees have shipped ten goals in their previous three matches and haven't turned the corner as many had hoped. Last week's defeat to Yeovil Town wasn't helped in the fact that the Bees played 60 minutes of the match with ten men, following Tomi Adeloye's controversial dismissal. However, the boss was keen to point out that there were no excuses for the manner of the goals conceded in the opening 20 minutes, as the Glovers capitalised on slack Bees defending from corner kicks. Flowers will be demanding the Bees come flying out the traps for this one and after a week with no action, you'd hope energy will be high for a crucial home fixture.

The games come thick and fast from here on in for the Bees and if they harbour any hopes of closing the gap on those immediately above them then they need to start trying to put together some results on a consistent basis. The performance levels have varied in recent matches, so Flowers will be hoping that his side returned energised from a break and ready to kick on in this busy part of the season.

The boss was hopeful that Anthony Wordsworth would be in contention for a return to action, after he missed the last two matches with a dead leg, so that could be a welcome boost ahead of the game. Meanwhile, Courtney Baker-Richardson has had an additional week to build up his fitness, whilst new signing Lee Vaughan is in contention to make his debut for the Club after arriving from AFC Telford United last week. Matt Preston continues to ramp up his recovery from injury but Flowers' admitted that the centre back is at least a couple of weeks away from returning. Meanwhile, Josh Walker continues to be assessed daily as he continues to try to return to fitness from a muscle injury that has kept him out for the vast majority of the campaign.

LAST TIME WE MET:

The Bees had to field a depleted side in the reverse fixture as the side led by Steve Jenkins secured a goalless draw in North Wales back in late October.
