New signing David Stephens talks about his move to Barnet
Central defender David Stephens became the latest addition to Mark Robson’s squad when he signed for the Bees on transfer deadline day. A Wales Under-21 international, David joins Barnet from Hibernian where he made 29 appearances during two seasons at the SPL club.
Barnetfc.com caught up with the young defender for a quick chat after his first day training with the Bees.
On his decision to join the club he said, “I’m delighted to be here. Mark Robson really sold it to me and Paul Fairclough has known me for many years. I like the club’s ambition and I was very impressed with the training facilities and plans for the new stadium.”
Having spent two seasons in the Scottish Premier League, David feels he can use that experience to his advantage. “It was a high standard and I came up against many different types of opposition strikers. The experience I gained playing in front of big crowds and being under pressure to perform will be valuable at Barnet.”
What does David think about the team’s aims and his personal goals for the season? “I think we need to steady the ship. Once we tighten up the defence and start scoring some goals things should improve and we can hopefully secure a comfortable league position. I want to help the team do well above anything. That’s the most important thing. I’d like to bring my qualities to the side and show everyone the kind of player I can be.”
And what kind of player should the fans expect to see? “A lot of people look at me and think because of my size I must be the kind of player to go just through people, but I like to play good football. I can be that type of player but I’m also strong, confident and like to pass the ball on the floor.”
Stephens will hope to make his first appearance for The Bees at Underhill against Gillingham on Saturday.
