Beegin the Beeguine...
It would a tremendous achievement if Crewe Alexandra are able to put out a team made up entirely of home grown players in their last league game of the season this weekend. I haven’t heard it stated but I would imagine this is the dream shared by all those involved in the youth set-up at The Hive.
Barnet certainly started the campaign with a young team but as the season has progressed more experienced players have come to the fore. At the moment Elliot Johnson is waving the flag for the Academy, but just behind him there seems to be a growing body of young talent poised to grasp their opportunity: Jamal Lowe, George Sykes and Iffy Allen to name just three.
If youth is the future much of what that future will look like will be mapped out at Sixfields tomorrow afternoon where a nerve-jangling afternoon awaits with umpteen combinations of results determining which league the Bees will be in next season.
Are the Bees in good form? If the performance and result last week against Wycombe is any guide the answer must be yes as Barnet dominated from the first and despite leaving it late to break the deadlock were worthy winners.
But goals have been hard to come by of late and it will be fascinating to see the team selection at 2 o’clock tomorrow. Could the Bees be unchanged from the Wycombe match? The side certainly seemed to have a good balance about it; but it would be more than fair to say that Luke Gambin has staked a claim for a starting berth.
Northampton, with their excellent home record, will not be an easy nut to crack. They will still be smarting from their shock defeat at home to York City and will be determined to start their Play-Off fixtures with a bit of momentum behind them.
