BLOOMFIELD's PITCH: Pre Gateshead

16 August 2013

I have heard that “It’s A Long Way To Tipperary” but surely it must be further to The International Stadium, Gateshead. It feels that way.
The supporters’ coach will leave The Hive at 6.30 tomorrow morning with its band of dedicated Bees whilst the squad will travel north on Friday afternoon.
The journey to an away fixture can be one of expectation of what is ahead, the possibility of a sparkling performance and three points; the return journey, if the result has gone the other way can drag on seemingly without end.
The trip back from Northampton last year and coming away from an embarrassing result at Crewe a few seasons back immediately and painfully spring to mind.
Still we must travel in good spirits, the Bees are undefeated, have yet to concede a goal and are nicely positioned in the table, albeit with only two games played.
There were over 200 supporters at Tamworth in midweek, an excellent turn out, and you got a real feeling from talking to the locals that they had a lot of respect for Barnet, they were not quite in fear of them, but they were certainly wary and felt that their team needed to be on the top of their game to inflict a defeat on the Bees.
The International Stadium’s pitch is surrounded by an athletics track, which doesn’t make for the best viewing experience and I would imagine it is not something that the players relish, since often ¾ of these grounds are closed off to supporters.
Whilst Rotherham United’s new New York stadium has rightly attracted compliments, when they were playing at the Don Valley stadium in Sheffield the distance to the playing arena considerably distracted from the enjoyment of watching a match. And being positioned high up in a remote corner of the ground didn’t help either.
An enduring pleasant memory however was the amazing mazy run by Cliff Akurang when he waltzed through the Millers’ defence to score an exceptional goal. Now that was worth travelling quite a distance to witness!
