Newman: "Our best performance of the season"

25 November 2014

Academy Manager discuss win over Posh and resulting praise from Barry Fry.

Academy Manager Henry Newman was delighted with the way that his side bounced back from the disappointment of being knocked out of the FA Youth Cup on Thursday to claim a superb win again title rivals Peterborough United on Saturday.

Just 36 hours after being eliminated by Southend at Roots Hall, the U18s were back in action and turning on the style as the table-topping Bees dispatched second-placed Peterborough United 5-2 away from home.

Discussing the game, Newman was full of praise for both the application and resolve of his team, saying:

“It was an absolutely brilliant performance really, bordering on our best performance of the season which after a disappointing Thursday night was really good to see.

“They showed a lot of character. Two games in 36 hours is never easy especially when you are a group of 16 and 17-year-old lads.”

He also revealed that the U18s free-flowing football had caught the eye of former Barnet manager and current Peterborough Director of Football Barry Fry:

“Barry Fry was watching and he has come up to me while the game was still going on and said that we were the best Youth Team that he has seen so far this season.

“Coming from somebody with that much experience, particularly watching youth football, was really good to hear and I passed that message onto the boys.”

Having already seen his side attract another plaudit in Southend manager Phil Brown last week, Newman admits that such praise means a lot as his side look to protect their seven point lead at the top with seven games remaining:

“When you are getting compliments like that from opposing staff it is nice to hear and makes you think that we are doing things the right way here.”
