Martin: "It was a good point"

14 September 2014

Manager pleased with hard-earned point against Telford despite late equaliser.

Martin Allen said that he was satisfied to come away from New Bucks Head with a point on Saturday, after an injury-time equaliser by AFC Telford United meant that his side were forced to settle for a draw.

Speaking after the game, the Barnet manager said:

“I thought that it was a good point. We were a bit disappointing in the first half, the way we played. We never really got going and I must say it was pretty average all round. But in the second half we played much, much better and dominated the game.

“That last minute goal was disappointing, but I’ve got to say a lot of credit goes to the players for the way that they turned it around in the second half and I thought that they played very, very well.

“We’ve come away from home and got a good point. We’ve collected another point to our total and it is away from home. When you’re top and playing a team at the bottom, as we saw against Alfreton last week, these games are always difficult.

“Over the course of ten months, you take those points and are happy to get out of here with a point, that’s for sure.”

Martin also acknowledged that Telford had provided a tough test, and praised the way that the players he brought on from the bench helped to turn around Barnet’s fortunes:

“To be fair to Telford, I thought they battled hard and were a strong team. They made it a physical game and they were better than us in the first half.

“They put in a great shift and played well. It wasn’t until we got going that we dominated the game and could’ve had more goals than we did. We’ve been free scoring away from home and playing very well but we didn’t manage to convert our chances.

“The subs did really well. I’ve got a good squad of players here, a very good squad of players. If you check through the games that we have played all of the subs have come on and made a difference so I am very lucky in that way. Nursey was superb when he went on, I think it was him that lifted us all to be honest.

“The team that ends the game is just important as the team that starts the game. All of the players are very conscientious. They are hardworking and a humble group of men. They look after each other, they help each other and support each other.”
