Youth Team champions sign off with a win

28 January 2015

Title-winning U18s round off regular season with a 3-1 win over Gillingham.

The victorious Barnet FC Youth Team rounded off their season with a 3-1 win over Gillingham on Tuesday having already secured a first league title in their history on Saturday with a thumping 8-1 win against Dagenham & Redbridge at The Hive.

Goals from trialists Sevdar Bokciu and Emmanuel Afolabi as well as a sensational finish from first-year scholar George Booker helped a much-changed Barnet side overcome the division’s bottom side in order to finish the season six points clear of nearest challengers MK Dons.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Professional Development Phase Lead Coach reflected on a hugely successful campaign and praised all those who had helped to make it possible:

“It has sunk in now. We said to the players that they are league winners because they have been the most consistent team over the season and they have deserved it.

“Great credit must go to them but also to all of the staff that have worked hard with them over the course of the season.

“It’s not just me and Henry, it is Kostas in Strength & Conditioning, it is Lud our Match Analysis man, it is Gemma the medical physio.

“Everybody has had a part to play here and it is a great credit to everyone around here. It has been really good for them and it has been a pleasure this season.”

Meanwhile Academy Manager Henry Newman is already focusing on the next challenge, which sees the U18s called straight back into action:

“I think the important thing is to realise is that we now have an opportunity to go and win a second league. We are going into a Merit League now where we join with the South West.

“The fixtures start next weekend and we want to start strong and hope that we can do the same again.”
