Martin Allen: “It was a great night”

16 August 2016

Read the manager’s post-match thoughts…

Martin Allen was delighted with his team’s performance against Blackpool tonight.

Speaking after the match, the Barnet manager said:

“It was a great ending to the game – I thought it was our best performance of the season to be fair.

“We played really well, but I thought that Blackpool were a good team too.

“I thought that they put in a fantastic effort; they hit the post a couple of times and I think that we hit it a couple of times too.

“We played some really good football tonight, which is something that we’ve been looking to improve on.

“I just thought that it was a great night - I was so proud of all those players when that goal went in at the end!

“The supporters over on the far side stayed right until the end, and they stayed with the team right until the end too.

“It’s a great feeling and I’m so pleased for the players and the fans.

“It’s hard at the moment with four games in ten days – it isn’t easy for everyone to always be on top form.

“But we played some great football and we were unlucky not to go ahead.

“It’s a good result and a good point, what with us equalising so close to the end.

“When you’ve got a group of players that are as conscientious, caring and hardworking as ours, I’m always proud of them.

“I’m always proud of them and the work that they do, because they are a good, honest bunch.

“This is another point onto our total and there are 43 games to go.

“The countdown has already started and we’re doing ok.

“The players are so relentless and fit – they just kept going tonight.

“The subs that came on did well – Luke Gambin did well and then Shaun Batt made a big difference to our attack with his pace.

“Sam Muggleton came on for his long throws and Alex Nicholls switched to right back.

“So we had a mixture of everything at that stage – centre forwards playing right back, left backs playing in central midfield and about five centre forwards on the pitch!

“But you just know that these players will keep going.

“I thought that we looked a little bit fatigued in the first half and not as sharp as we have done recently.

“But then in the second half we really upped our game.“

Unfortunately Martin also had some less positive news for Bees fans, saying:

“We’ve had some bad news and Michael Gash is going to be out for a long time.

“It’s a very serious cruciate knee ligament injury.

“He has been an outstanding player for me here at Barnet and I’m sure that all the supporters will feel the same.

“He is an iconic figure here at The Hive and he doesn’t always get the plaudits that he deserves.

“Not only is he a good footballer, he is a really nice person and is great to have in the dressing room.

“We’re planning Michael’s surgery as we speak, to get him in as soon as possible.

“But he is probably going to be out for the remainder of the season.

“We won’t be moving into the transfer market though.

“We’ve got enough players and have strength in depth here.

“The Chairman has pushed the boat out to get so many decent players in – we can’t have any more because we’ve got too many players as it is.”
