Curtis Weston: “We’re a team that dig in”

The Bees midfielder discusses Barnet’s victory against Portsmouth.

Barnet midfielder Curtis Weston reflected on the Bees’ disciplined performance against Portsmouth, following Tuesday night’s game.

Speaking after the 1-0 win at The Hive, Curtis said:

“You can see how hard we worked – it was a case of ‘backs against the wall’ in the second half, but we dug in and worked hard together.

“Portsmouth are a big side and they brought a lot of fans who were pretty loud and lively.

“So the result makes us extra happy today, and obviously it’s the gaffer’s 500th game in management as well – so that makes it extra special and we’re pleased for him.

“A lot of Portsmouth’s play was in front of us, there was no real penetration in behind.

“It was hard work for us, because they were moving the ball and they move it pretty well.

“They started hitting diagonal balls towards the end of the game when they brought on their big striker.

“But I thought that we dealt really well with it and defended as a group.

“We know how good they are as a passing team, but we said before the game that we wanted to go out there and play some football ourselves.

“In the first half we got in their faces, won the ball back, and put some good bits and pieces together.”

Reflecting on his role as a left winger against Portsmouth, Curtis said:

“I’ve played on the right wing, left wing, though the centre and up front this season.

“Playing on the left is a little bit difficult for me, in terms of knowing when and when not to go – it’s not natural for me out there.

“But I’ve been asked to do a job, and I’ll always go out there and do it to the best of my abilities.

“I think we can be happy with ourselves, and our performances so far this season.

“If you look at League Two, a lot of the clubs in the division may have bigger budgets than us.

“But we’re a team that dig in, and our togetherness is really strong.

“I think that counts for a lot, as we’ve seen tonight.”
