Preview | Peterborough United (a) - Carabao Cup Round One

7 August 2017

Carabao Cup Round One - The ABAX Stadium - Tuesday 8th August 2017 – KO 7:45pm

Team News:

John Akinde is still recovering from a minor knee injury which kept him out of Saturday’s game at Forest Green. Richard Brindley (foot) and Curtis Weston (calf) are doubtful. Jack Taylor will serve his one match ban following his red card on Saturday.

Last Time We Met:

The two teams met at The Hive last season in the Checkatrade Trophy, with Posh running out 2-1 winners. Paul Taylor gave the visitors an early lead before a first professional goal for Justin Amaluzor tied the game in the 68th minute.

However with 6 minutes left to play, George Moncur netted to give Peterborough the win but neither side advanced out of the group.

Manager:

Grant McCann was appointed Peterborough manager full time last summer after a good spell as caretaker following Graham Westley’s departure from London Road.

The Northern Irishman had made 185 appearances as a player for the Posh between 2010 and 2015. His youth career began at Distillery and West Ham United but was loaned out several times before he found success at Cheltenham Town. He was with the Gloucestershire club for 7 years before moving to Barnsley and then onto Scunthorpe before joining Peterborough.

He finished his playing career at Linfield. He played 40 games for the Northern Ireland national side over 11 years.

In his first season in charge of Peterborough he guided them to 11th place, 11 points off of the play off positions.

Dangerman:

Marcus Maddison bagged 8 goals last campaign and has attracted interest from clubs in the Championship. Maddison is a pacey wide midfielder who is more than comfortable in the middle of the park as well.

Connections:

The Bees have two former Peterborough players in their ranks. Ricardo Santos joined Barnet from the ABAX stadium in January after making 63 appearances for the Cambridgeshire side.

More recently, striker Shaq Coulthirst joined Barnet following his release from Peterborough last month.

Barnet’s youngest ever player Mathew Stevens could have lined up against the Bees for Peterborough but was loaned out last week to Evo Stik Southern side Kettering Town.

And of course Barry Fry, a household name among all Barnet fans, is Director of Football at Peterborough.

Last Time Out:

The Posh got their Sky Bet League One campaign underway at the weekend with a 2-1 victory at home over Plymouth Argyle.

They made the perfect start with Leo Da Silva Lopes’ cross taking a huge deflection and ending up in the back of the net.

Junior Morais doubled their lead shortly after the break as Junior Morais was left with a simple finish following good work down the right hand side by Jack Marriot.

Argyle pulled a goal back late on through Gregg Wylde but few chances followed for either side giving Peterborough 3 points on the opening day.

Peterborough: Jonathan Bond, Ryan Tafazolli, Jack Baldwin, Steven Taylor, Leo Da Silva Lopes (sub Alex Penny, 90 mins), Gwion Edwards, Anthony Grant, Michael Doughty, Marcus Maddison (sub Danny Lloyd, 81 mins), Jack Marriott, Junior Morias (sub Idris Kanu, 68 mins). Unused substitutes: Josh Tibbetts, Chris Forrester, Andrew Hughes, Callum Chettle.
