Match Preview | Cambridge United (a)

25 December 2017

EFL Sky Bet League Two - Abbey Stadium - Tuesday 26th December 2017 – KO 3pm

Team News:

Harry Taylor is sidelined along with Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Curtis Weston.

Elliott Johnson (knee) and Dave Tarpey (knee) are both out with long-term injuries.

Last Time We Met:

This is the second meeting between the two sides this season, the previous fixture ended with a 3-1 win for Barnet.

Mauro Vilhete put the home side 1-0 up just before the break before Shaquile Coulthirst doubled the Bees advantage just after the hour mark.

Leon Legge pulled one back for Cambridge after 71 minutes, but Vilhete got his second and Barnet’s third to seal the three points.

Manager:

Shaun Derry is currently Manager of Cambridge United, having been appointed on the 12th November 2015.

Derry began his playing career at Notts County having joined the club at the age of 10 and came through the Academy to make 93 appearances at first-team level.

After 27 appearances in the 1997/98 Division Three championship season, he moved on to Sheffield United for a fee of £700,000.

A natural leader, who has been a popular figure at every club he has represented through his passionate displays, Derry has captained Portsmouth, Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers.

He played a pivotal role in promotions to the top-flight with Palace and QPR and is now looking to transfer his successful playing career into management.

Derry enjoyed early success in his first managerial role at Notts County by securing their Sky Bet League One status in 2013/14.

Dangerman:

Uche Ikpeazu is Cambridge United’s top goalscorer this season, scoring eight goals in 21 Sky Bet League Two appearances, beating his tally from last season already.

In his first season at the club, he managed six goals in 29 appearances and despite only being 22 years old, he’s had a lot of experience.

Starting at Reading before moving to Watford in 2013, he had six loan spells away from the club including three spells at Crewe Alexandra and most prolifically at Port Vale in 2015.

Ikpeazu certainly has a lot of talent and will certainly be wanting to make an impact in front of the home crowd on Tuesday.

Connections:

Barnet club captain Michael Nelson spent a year at Cambridge United before signing for the Bees in 2015. He made 38 appearances for The U’s during the 2014/15 season, helping the club avoid relegation in 19th place. So far, he’s made 98 appearances in all competitions for Barnet, including his 700th competitive appearances against Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Craig Ross also spent a season at Cambridge between 2012 and 2013, making 15 appearances in the Conference. He signed for Barnet at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, making 18 appearances across all competitions so far.

Last Time Out:

In their last fixture, Cambridge drew 3-3 away at Notts County despite leading 3-0 going into the last 15 minutes.

The U’s took the lead five minutes before halftime, Uche Ikpeazu finishing expertly from just inside the area.

Jevani Brown then scored a brace, in the 49th and 68th minute, giving Shaun Derry’s side a three-goal cushion against his former club.

However, the comeback was well and truly on when Lewis Alessandra headed home with a quarter of an hour left to play.

Shaun Brisley pulled another one back with three minutes left on the clock, but substitute Jonathan Forte stole a point with his goal late into stoppage time, sending the home crowd wild.

The Magpies failed to close the gap on Luton Town, four points behind the Imps in second. Cambridge dropped to 16th on goal difference after the draw.
