Henry Newman: "We've got to be more ruthless"

28 January 2017

Rossi Eames and Henry Newman reflect on Barnet's 1-1 draw at Carlisle United in EFL League Two...

Henry Newman says Barnet must be more ruthless after watching the Bees dominate at Carlisle United but, ultimately, leave Brunton Park with a 1-1 draw.

After bossing the first half the Bees fell behind against the run of play when Charlie Wyke tucked home from point-blank range.

Hopes of a comeback were starting to diminish when Simeon Akinola was sent off for following through on Michael Raynes just after the hour mark.

Eleven minutes later the Bees were level. Elliott Johnson burst into the box and was pushed by Tom Miller, earning Barnet a penalty. John Akinde duly dispatched the spot kick and might have won it at the death with greater composure.

Reflecting on the game, Newman said: "We told the boys we had to be more ruthless – that's the long and the short of it.

"For 45 minutes we absolutely dominated it in our eyes. We're disappointed with the goal we conceded but in terms of the chances we created, it was outstanding play through the middle third into the final third.

"It was slightly different in the second half. They came at us at the start but we weathered the storm well. We got into the game and had some chances ourselves.

"We know we can do it but we've got to be ruthless."

Joint head coach Rossi Eames echoed his partner's thoughts and praised the Bees' display against a side vying for automatic promotion from EFL League Two.

"Given the circumstances we're pleased with a point," he said. "But we're also frustrated. The players in there feel they could have had three points and they're frustrated.

"But that's their mentality; they want to win every game and we want to win every game. Even coming here with them flying high in third position we felt we had the quality and dominated the game nearly from start to finish."
