Rossi Eames: "We took our foot off the gas"

Rossi Eames felt Barnet took their foot off the gas after going ahead against EFL League Two leaders Doncaster Rovers who scored three times to take a 3-1 win away from The Hive London.

John Akinde scored his 18th of the campaign after just 13 minutes, collecting Niall Mason’s no-look backpass, rounding former Bees loanee Ian Lawlor and tucking into the empty net.

But a pair of strikes from James Coppinger, sandwiching John Marquis’ close-range finish, ensured the table toppers headed north with maximum points.

“We’re disappointed,” Eames said. “In the first 15 minutes I thought we were at it – like we spoke about – and came out of the traps well and got a good goal from pressing.

“Then we took our foot off the gas and didn’t do the things we’ve done so well in the past few games. There were a couple of roles and responsibilities which should have been done better.

“Against a team like Doncaster if you don’t do those things well you will get punished.”

For the first quarter of an hour there was little between the two sides and a neutral would have been hard pressed to pick out the side top of the pile.

But after going ahead the Bees were unable to build on their advantage and that was a disappointment for Henry Newman.

He said: “It was quite an even first 15 minutes. We set up well and we were quite happy with how we set up.

“We got the press right and forced a mistake from them to go 1-0 up but we weren’t able to consolidate that lead for long enough during the game which would have helped us kick on.

“If you can then grow in confidence into the game that might allow you the opportunities to nick a second. You’re playing against the team top of the league – they won’t make it easy for you and they didn’t make it easy for us today.”
