Dembele talks Stevenage

30 March 2017

Former Stevenage defender Bira Dembele says that last weekends Cheltenham win has made for a positive week as his Bees side gear up to face his old club on Saturday.

“The weeks been good. We were happy to win on Saturday. It’s given us confidence. We’ve trained well and we’ve been working hard.”

“When you don’t win for a couple of games it’s hard - It gets in your head. When you win again, you then know you can do it.”

Bira is looking forward to seeing a few old faces on Saturday but his main focus will be on stealing three points for the Bees once kick off arrives.

“I had a good time at Stevenage. It’s always good to go back. They were my first team in England. All the fans and staff were very welcoming when I came from France.”

“It’ll be nice to see everyone again, but I’m playing for Barnet now and I’ll be playing for a win.”

It’s been an up and down season for Bira, with injuries playing their part in his second year with the club.

“I’ve had a couple of injuries which held me back. But I still think I can do better.
I’m taking it game by game and seeing how it goes.”

Bira credits his Bees teammates for helping him settle in so well at The Hive, with the spirit among the players never fading under the pressure of frustrating results.

“The lads have been great. It’s been a really good experience here. The mentality is different from France. I like that.”

Since Kevin Nugent took over at Barnet, Bira has seen a massive improvement on the training field.

“You can feel he knows what he’s talking about. He’s a proper manager, explains everything to the players, and shows us everything step by step.”

Bira and his Bees side are fired up for the weekend and know the importance of the game to the fans.

“It’s a local derby. We know that. We’ll be playing to win. We want to play well and win the game - especially as it’s a derby.”
