Alan Devonshire is the new Manager at York Road and joined from Braintree Town in May. Devonshire featured in nearly 450 games in midfield, most of them alongside Sir Trevor Brooking, for West Ham United between 1976-1990 and also won 8 full England caps. He has also managed at Hampton & Richmond.
Brief Directions by Road:
Leave the M4 at Junction 8 and take the A404(M). At the end of the A404(M) take the A4 (Bath Road) towards Maidenhead. On reaching the town centre you will come to a large roundabout. Bear left (the 2nd exit) continuing on the A4. Go straight across the first roundabout and at the second turn right into Forlease Road and then second right into York Road. These directions courtesy of MUFC.
Car Parking at the ground is strictly limited to the players and officials. There are numerous municipal facilities in the town centre which is only a 10-minute walk away.
Directions by Train:
Maidenhead station is 5 minutes walk from the ground and is served by trains from London Paddington. A “fast train” is less than 30 minutes journey time.
Eating and Drinking Locally:
Stripes Bar is the social club facility at the ground and we will all be made welcome. The Conservative club adjacent to the ground is also open and if you speak to the steward he might remember me as I have gigged there with numerous bands over the years!
The ground first opened in 1871 is now officially recognised by the FA as the "oldest senior football ground continuously used by the same club"
The Railway stand was built in 2014 and is the focal point of the ground, it holds 550 seats. Behind both goals covered terracing is on offer.
Our Last Meeting & Memories:
A pre-season friendly in July 2015 finished 0-0. Looking back at my records our last competitive visit to Maidenhead was I believe in October 1964 in the old Athenian League when a Roger Figg goal earned us a point in a 1-1 draw – a nice 4th birthday present for me!
Some serious A list celebs have resided in the town over the years – TV icon Richard Dimbleby, Dr Doolittle author Hugh Lofting, the Spice Girls shared a house here before they became a nuisance and the enigmatic actress/personality Diana Dors lived here too. A very well known famous recent resident is Marc Almond One Man Show tribute act, Jeff Searle.
