Buildbase FA Trophy Third Round – War Memorial Sports Ground – Saturday 2nd February 2019 – KO: 15:00
Barnet are back in action this weekend when they travel to Bostik Premier Division side Carshalton Athletic in the Buildbase FA Trophy third round.
The Bees will be going into the tie full of confidence after holding Championship outfit Brentford to a 3-3 draw in the FA Cup on Monday night in their last fixture. Ollie Watkins scored the opener just before the break before Shaq Coulthirst bagged two in three minutes in the early stages of the second period, turning the game on it’s head. However, Neal Maupay equalised from the spot before Sergi Canos’ calm finish meant Brentford regained their lead. There was to be another twist though as Dan Sparkes produced a moment of magic from a free-kick with 15 minutes remaining to take the tie to a replay.
Should tomorrow's fixture be level after 90 minutes, a replay will be required. A date for that replay would be confirmed in the near future.
The last time these two sides met was back in 1993 in the first round of the FA Cup. Kelly Haag and Shaun Close netted for the Bees as they won 2-1 in a campaign which saw them bow out at round three at the hands of Chelsea.
Manager: Peter Adeniyi
Peter Adeniyi was appointed manager in April 2016 and quickly improved proceedings at Carshalton as the Robins narrowly missed out on a play-off spot in his first season in charge. However, he did manage to guide the club to promotion last campaign, winning the Isthmian League South Division title on 102 points.
Adeniyi also tasted promotion with Merstham in 2015 and wore the captain’s armband at Dulwich Hamlet. The Carshalton boss also played for the likes of Eastleigh, Lewes and Bromley.
One to Watch: Mike Dixon
Carshalton midfielder Mike Dixon is the one to watch ahead of tomorrow’s game after bagging two goals in his last three games.
He also found the net in the Robins’ previous FA Trophy game against Salisbury and will undoubtedly be hoping to add to his tally tomorrow afternoon.
Last Season’s FA Trophy Form:
Carshalton have already exceeded last season’s FA Trophy run after they bowed out of the competition in the preliminary round, losing 2-0 away at Heybridge Swifts.
Lewis Godbold opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark before Joan Luque ensured progression to the next round.
This Season’s FA Trophy Run:
However, things are looking a lot more brighter this season as far as the FA Trophy is concerned. Entering the competition at the first qualifying stage, The Robins began their run with a 2-1 replay win over Metropolitan Police after the initial tie ended 2-2.
They played host to Harlow Town in the next round, beating them 3-1 before knocking out Walton Casuals 2-0 at the final stage of qualifying.
After booking their place in round one, they edged out Dorking Wanderers with a 1-0 win and will go into tomorrow’s tie off the back of a 4-1 thrashing over Salisbury at the previous stage.
Recent Form In All Competitions:
Carshalton, who sit 15th in the Isthmian League Premier Division, have only won once in their last five games in all competitions.
The Robins began 2019 with a 2-0 defeat away to Bognor Regis before their FA Trophy thumping over Salisbury. Attentions turned back to the league a week later but they endured their second defeat on the bounce, losing 2-1 at home to ten-men Merstham. They returned to winning ways in their next game though, beating AFC Hornchurch 2-1 at home. However, they go into tomorrow’s match off the back of a 2-2 draw away at Whitehawk last weekend.
