Report & Reaction | Barnet FC 2-0 Hampton & Richmond Borough - Middlesex Senior Cup

15 January 2019

Goals from Simeon Akinola and Josh Walker allowed a much changed Barnet side to progress to the semi-finals of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup for the second season in a row.

Darren Currie trusted youth to see his side through and his faith was rewarded.

A lovely interchange just outside the area between Mo Bettamer and Simeon Akinola allowed the Nigerian to neatly slot the ball away with power and panache to edge ahead in a first half of few clear cut chances.

The game overall was marred by an injury to Akinola just five after he opened the scoring, he landed awkwardly and seemed to know immediately that his night was up.

A good ball by Mo Bettamer unlocked the Hampton & Richmond defence for Barnet’s second. His deep cross was met by Dan Sparkes on the volley and that effort was far too hot to handle for Beavers keeper Tom Lovelock. He pushed the ball out only for Josh Walker to gobble up the rebound and double the Bees advantage on the stroke of half time.

Hampton & Richmond offered very little to bother Rihards Matrevics, their main threat was from set pieces however they couldn’t muster a meaningful attempt on target.

The Latvian goalkeeper did make several fine saves as the game came to a close, including one from a Zak Joseph effort to keep his clean sheet.

The Bees remain in every cup competition that they have entered and ended this tie with 5 current Academy Scholars on the pitch.
