Bees boss Darren Currie was full of praise for his side following our 5-1 victory over Berkhamsted last night in our opening pre-season friendly.
Currie’s side took a four-goal lead into half-time courtesy of a Jack Taylor and Shaq Coulthirst brace. However, the hosts struck first in the second half after Lewis Toomey pulled one back just shy of the hour mark before Medy Elito bagged Barnet’s fifth two minutes later.
It was a positive opening to the Bees’ pre-season schedule and Currie admired the hard-working attitude of those involved last night.
“Results are obviously a plus, it’s always nice to win football matches and it was a good workout for us”, he said.
“Everyone got the type of leg work done that I was hoping for, no injuries which is always pretty key to what we try to do in pre-season and I want everyone available for the Yeovil game and everyone put a real good shift in tonight and worked hard, we scored a couple of good goals.
“Some of the stuff that we had been working on had played out as well so really pleased tonight. The attitude has been first class, the attitude was spot on against Southall on Saturday and it was excellent again tonight and it’s about getting that base.
Taylor, who marked his return to pre-season with two goals last night, was one of the main subjects of praise from the boss.
“He’s a class player, I’m a big fan of Jack. He was a little bit sloppy at times funnily enough tonight which is unlike him but he worked hard and at the minute, that’s kind of what I’m looking at first and foremost. It’s about working together, being unselfish in our running.
“I know Jack’s a very good, talented boy; very, very good player, I’m a massive fan of his and he obviously had a big summer playing for the Republic of Ireland and he’s come back and got a couple of cracking goals tonight so he’ll just get better and better the more we look after him.”
Dan Sparkes also played a vital role last night by clinching three assists and he too caught Currie’s eye.
“It’s more like the Sparkes that I know that we signed last summer, I’ll definitely say that. I know what he’s capable of, he produced it in moments last year.
“He’s got a wonderful left foot, he’s got very good delivery and he, along with me and everyone else, just wants to see it more often but he worked hard tonight and played the full game which he needed to but to get three assists, he’s played well. I’m really pleased for him.”
