The Bees fell to a 3-0 defeat to Boreham Wood in their first game of 2021. Kabongo Tshimanga gave his side the lead after catching onto a long ball and even added a second goal about ten minutes later from the penalty spot where Myles Judd was also sent off. Just before the break the visitors took the game away from the Bees, when Tom Champion added a third and so were able to see out the second half and clinch the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bees were looking to get their first win of the new year, having not played since the FA Trophy defeat to Dorking Wanderers back on December 19th.
The match itself was started well by the Bees, holding a good shape and trying to break through the Boreham Wood defence.
There was certainly an intensity, which was to be expected of a local derby as both sides fought hard to win the ball and win every decision.
Tshimanga had the games first real opportunity of the game on 12 minutes for the visitors, when he was played in clear on goal, only for Scott Loach to save well, from the low powerful effort.
Just over five minutes later, they had their lead, after a long ball from goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore found its way to Tshimanga who slotted home to put his side in front.
Boreham Wood really started putting the pressure on, firing shot after shot on the Barnet goal, with Loach producing a fantastic double save. This was before the visitors were awarded a penalty and Judd was sent off for handling the ball on the line, which was then tucked away by Tshimanga for his and his sides 2nd of the game.
Five minutes before half time, Loach ensured the Bees stayed in the game, with an unbelievable stop to deny Tshimanga from getting his hat trick.
But things went from bad to worse for the Bees when Champion scored on the volley just outside the area, with two minutes remaining of the first half.
The second half didn't get off to the greatest of starts for the Bees, as Josh Walker was forced to come off, after receiving a knock.
Chances for both sides however were coming few and far between, with Boreham Wood holding most of the ball, with the Bees doing all they could to contain them.
The Bees were unlucky to be denied a penalty with about 25 minutes left of the game to play, when Effiong was taken down in the box.
Loach was doing a fantastic job to keep out Boreham Wood from increasing their lead any further, making a number of crucial saves.
The Bees were unable to take advantage of this up the other end of the pitch, having very little in the way of a clear cut chance, meaning they were unable to cut the deficit down, as Boreham Wood held out for the 3-0 win.
