Match Pack: Barnet 2-0 Sutton United

29 May 2021

The Bees ended the 2020-21 campaign with a win over the champions, as they beat Sutton United 2-0 at the Hive London in front of their fans.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With it being the final game of the season and with there being little to fight for in the game, it was understandable that it was a slow start from both teams.

Ephron Mason-Clark was the first to have a real opportunity in the game when he produced some individual brilliance to dribble through the Sutton defence and force a save.

The Champions were struggling to impose themselves on the game, as the Bees continued to look the most likely team to get a goal, with Tomi Adeloye constantly causing problems for the Sutton backline.

Mason-Clark continued to try and make an impact in the game, looking eager to grab himself a goal, even creating chances in and around the box for his teammates with Harry Taylor inches away from being able to get through on goal before being denied by a strong challenge.

The only real threat Sutton caused in the first half came right before the break when they broke at pace towards the Bees box, with David Ajiboye whipping in an inviting cross, which Adam Parkes was able to gather with confidence.

Adeloye who was having a positive game started the second half with a really good effort on goal when he struck a clean free kick near the edge of the Sutton box only before the referee eventually called for a Bees handball.

The Bees were playing at a high tempo from the restart, as the fans made their voices heard in the stands, with there being a sense that a goal was coming for the home side.

After about 15 minutes played in the second half, the Bees did in fact take the lead, in the most unusual fashion when the ball was crossed in and turned into the visitors net, although many were unsure at first if it was a goal or even who scored it. It was initially believed that Taylor got the goal, but it looked as if it turned out to be an own goal.

It was nearly two only a couple of minutes later when Mason-Clark struck a superb effort off the crossbar, which Adam Lovatt reacted to by having a shot of his own for the away side about five minutes later, which also hit the crossbar, as the game really started to open up.

But as the game entered into stoppage time, the Bees made it 2-0 in style when Josh Walker struck a beautiful finish into the top left hand corner, to wrap up the three points and give the home fans a win on the final day.
