Alex Armstrong – “We want to get a fit, strong and organised team”

Armstrong, who in the late 90’s was fitness coach with the Bees’, has spoken to barnetfc.com about his first impressions of the squad.

“They’re a fit bunch of players” he said. “They’ve got a good mentality and they want to work hard. Pre-season’s all about fitness and getting an idea of Rossi’s style of play.

“We want to get a fit, strong and organised team that will play his style of football.”

The former Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday coach is keen to bring some of what he learnt with New Zealand at the Confederations Cup to Barnet for the 2017/18 season.

“I’ve picked up lots from a technical and tactical point of view but a lot of it comes down to mentality, fitness and the culture you set within your club.

“I’d like to think I’m bringing in a few ideas to Barnet that are slightly different. But it’s not about being different, it’s about being good enough.”

Armstrong has been working with New Zealand for three years now and this year’s Confederations Cup saw the All Whites come up against hosts Russia, Mexico and Euro 2016 winners Portugal.

“It was a great experience. I’ve been working with New Zealand for the best part of three years now. We were massive underdogs, playing against some of the top teams in the world, so as an experience it’s very good, to go to Russia and see how these teams organise themselves.

“New Zealand did really well for where we’re at, the size of the nation and our ranking in world football.”
