It was great to get back to winning ways last weekend after a tricky run of games.

The team showed great character after Macclesfield went 1-0 up against the run of play in the first half, and after the interval Yiadom, Akinde and Weston struck the goals to give the Bees a crucial 3-1 victory.

For me each goal showed the quality of the team in different ways.

Andy Yiadom popped up from a few yards out to slide home and equalise, showing just what a shift he puts in running up and down the touchline week in, week out. I often see the hard work he does from my seat in the West Stand and the team is a lot better for it.

Secondly a quick-thinking free kick and a powerful finish from big John Akinde showed that Barnet have one of the best strikers in this division, as well as real quality from set plays.

Thirdly, Curtis Weston’s lung-busting stoppage time run against a by then tired Macclesfield defence showed what a great athlete he is in the midfield. It was an excellent run and a very cool finish to wrap up the three points.

In the end it was a really pleasing display to leave the Bees still on top of the Vanarama Conference with an eight point lead.

It was great also to see Martin Allen come over to salute the fans in the West Stand at the end of the game.

The manager has got The Hive rocking again and the fans were quick to sing his name during the 90 minutes. The players did a great job on Saturday but credit too to the man in charge.

Following Saturday’s home win Barnet take the long trip to Devon this weekend.

Torquay, having just been relegated from the Football League, will be a tough fixture. It is never an easy game at Plainmoor and Barnet have had some fantastic games with the Gulls in the past, not least the recent five-goal thriller in front of the BT Sports cameras at The Hive.

The midweek results show that the teams at the top of this league are still more than capable of picking up points, so it will be crucial to keep the momentum going on Saturday.

I won’t be making the long trip to Devon unfortunately – my six week old son Sam isn’t quite yet up to cross country travel and football yet! – but fair play to all Barnet fans who do.

It should be a great game. Come on you Bees!
