Charlie Clough: “It will go down to the wire”

Charlie Clough has experienced the agony of defeat at Wembley and the Barnet defender is hoping to go one better this season and avoid a repeat as the Bees chase a play-off place.
With 14 games remaining Barnet are two points shy of the top seven and a place in the end-of-season shoot-out for the fourth and final promotion spot to League One.
Clough made it as far as Wembley for the National League Play-Off Final last season with former club Forest Green Rovers. However, the Green Army lost 3-1 to Grimsby Town at the national stadium.
Now the 26-year-old is hoping to put that disappointment behind him but helping the Bees make the top seven.
“I think it will go down to the wire,” said the Taunton-born defender. “A few of the lads have said don’t look at the league, concentrate on us, and pick up as many points as we can.
“If we are there or thereabouts at the end of it then we are. That’s the way I look at it.
“It’s horrible if you don’t win,” Clough added. “I would not want to do that again. It is tense and a bit of pressure towards the end of the season but the group of lads we’ve got here will be able to handle it.”
After a blip towards the end of January and beginning of February the Bees have got back on track, taking maximum points from the long trip to Morecambe last Tuesday before being denied a repeat against Portsmouth by a last-gasp equaliser.
Asked what the difference had been, Clough replied: “We have been a lot more solid as a team.
“Defensively – as a team, not just as a back four – we have been hard to break down. Portsmouth scored a 25-yard goal last weekend. Other than that they did not really have a chance and nor did Morecambe.
“The last couple of performances and results have given us a springboard to build from. We are looking to get a result on Saturday and continue pushing for those play-off spots.”
