Darren Currie: ‘Everything is coming together nicely’

Manager Darren Currie today provided an update on how the Bees are shaping up as they head into the beginning of their pre-season fixtures. 

Currie’s team returned to The Hive for pre-season training last Wednesday and the boss is really enthused by what he has seen from his side so far. 

He said “We’ve been really pleased with the boys since they have come back in, they have come back in a good condition. I have made the sessions tough to make sure we are in good shape for the season to come.”

“Pre-season is always tough, but to be fair to the boys they have worked their socks off, their attitude has been spot on and the mood in the camp has been really good.”

Spirits are high out on the training pitch and the Bees Head Coach wants that to continue in all aspects of the Club for the upcoming campaign. 

“I say it often, but it is vital that as a Club we are together, the players, the staff and the supporters. It is going to be vital if we are going to be successful.”

“The mood has massively been helped by having one or two players back on the training pitch, we are only a couple of weeks in but everything is coming together nicely” 

The Bees have been able to finish the second week of training with almost a fully fit squad with only Josh Walker yet to train. Currie is pleased that his side is almost at a clean bill of health. 

“Mauro (Vilhete) has trained the past few days, which has been tough for him as he has been out for a long time but he has got his head down and is working hard. It is really good to have him back.” 

“Ricardo (Santos) is looking like an absolute monster! He has looked after himself over the summer and is in a very good condition. Charlee Adams is back training with us which is fantastic. Josh (Walker) will be back out on the grass very soon” 

The Bees will take on Southall in a training ground practice match at The Hive tomorrow (11 am) and the Bees boss is using the fixture to increase the sharpness of his players. 

“The idea of that game is simply to put some match minutes into the player’s legs after a tough week and a half of training” 

Goalkeeper Scott Loach is the only incoming player so far this summer, but the boss is hopeful that he will add a few more fresh faces to his side before the start of the season. 

“First of all I have been delighted with Scott Loach, from what I have seen so far he has made a huge impression on everyone and you can see why he has played at the level he has in his career.” 

“I’m not looking to add quantity, I want to add quality to the squad that we already have.” 

“I understand that there is some frustration that there isn’t signing after signing, but I want to get them right, in order to make us better. It’s taking a bit of time, but I am hopeful we will get a couple more deals across the line” 

Wednesday saw the 2019/20 National League fixtures released, with the Bees handed a challenging first month of the season. However, Currie is relishing the opportunity of being able to start well. 

“It’s a tough start, there’s no getting away from it, we face two teams who were playing in League Two last season” 

“I speak a lot about momentum and if we can do well from that eight-game period then we are set up nicely for the season, however, it also won’t define our season”
