Loan Watch: Sykes gets the Gulls flying

Barnet FC striker George Sykes continued his fine goal-scoring form this weekend during his month-long loan at Canvey Island.

The 20-year-old arrived on loan at The Prospects Stadium on January 15th after being transfer listed by Martin Allen back in December, and has now scored six goals in his last three games to help the Gulls climb clear of the relegation zone and up to 14th in the Ryman Premier League table.

His rich vein of form began with a first-half hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Tonbridge Angels last weekend which included a clinical shot into the bottom corner from twenty yards as well as some predatory finishing from inside the box, all of which can be seen in the video below:

This was then followed by a last-minute winner away to Lewes in midweek as he and strike partner Enoch Showunmi helped Canvey to their first consecutive wins of the season with a valuable three points against the Rooks.

Both player and club continued their fine run on Saturday during a 3-0 win away to high-flying Dulwich Hamlet which saw Sykes score two more for his loan club, rounding goalkeeper Phil Wilson to slot into an empty net during the first half before doubling their lead with a composed finish midway through the second half.

George’s loan spell comes to an end this weekend, but not before he looks to increase his tally with a trip to Witham Town tonight followed by a game at home to Grays Athletic on Saturday.
