McNielly’s managerial career began in 2010/11 with Sunderland. The Englishman took charge of the North-Eastern side’s youth team and was there for 2 and a half years before taking a break from coaching.

After over 2 years away from coaching, the 39-year-old made a return with Woking. In a similar role to that of when he was at Sunderland, McNielly was appointed as a youth coach at the club. The coach was with Woking for nearly 3 years before once again taking a break from football.

In 2018 McNielly headed to Aldershot town as a manager of the club’s Under 19 team before being made caretaker manager of the first team in 2022. On December 5^th 2022 McNielly was officially appointed as head coach of Aldershot Town.
